Guidelines for Common Dental Emergencies
Here are some basic guidelines if you experience these common dental emergencies:
Toothache
You can help treat the pain with analgesics such as Tylenol, also known as acetaminophen, or Advil, also known as Ibuprofen. Ibuprofen also has the added benefit of being anti-inflammatory which should provide additional relief.
Broken, Cracked, or Chipped Tooth
If you have a broken, cracked, or chipped tooth you should seek emergency dental help as soon as possible. If the injury is a result of head or face trauma and is accompanied by any nose or ear bleeding, loss of consciousness, dizziness and/or disorientation, or your teeth do not fit together properly afterwards, go to the hospital emergency room immediately for a professional evaluation of other possible medical needs. Avoid eating any hard foods before seeing a professional, this could worsen the state of your tooth.
Tooth Loose or Knocked Out
If your tooth is loose or has been knocked out it is important for you to go and see a dentist as soon as possible. Negligence to this problem could result in a very serious dental emergency. If you are experiencing a pain or discomfort around the tooth area, you can take pain soothers such as Tylenol, also known as Acetaminophen, or Advil, also known as Ibuprofen.
Broken Jaw
If your jaw has been broken go to the closest emergency room immediately. You could be facing more serious medical emergencies and it will be essential to your health to get this taken care of as soon as possible. After seeking medical help from a doctor you should set up an appointment with your dentist for further analysis of possible damage.
Bitten Lip or Tongue
For a bitten lip or tongue first assess the depth of the cut and whether or not there could be any harmful material stuck inside the would. If the cut is deeper or longer than 1/2″ you should seek medical attention. If there is an object o some sort stuck inside the cut you should seek a doctor. If the wound is minor you can take care of it at home by applying pressure to the cut area with a clean gauze and then applying ice to help reduce inflammation. You can expect even a minor cut on the lip or tongue to bleed a fair amount, so don’t assess the wound by amounts of blood.
